Advice For Ordering Your Wedding Cake

Choosing your wedding cake can be a daunting task, especially if you’ve never been involved in the world of cakes before! The very first thing to consider is how many people you are catering for and what flavour (or flavours) you want your cake to be. This will determine what size is required. If you are unsure about what flavour cake you would like, ask your cakemaker what flavours he or she provides and ask if you can taste samples of the cake.

The next step is to decide what ‘look’ or theme you want your cake to have. Would you prefer something traditional with floral sprays (sugar or fresh), novelty themed (hobbies, occupations etc.) or perhaps you want to incorporate a mixture of both. Would you like something serious or a bit more wacky?

Other considerations that need to be taken into account are: Colours; Do you want it to match your overall colour scheme? This is usually the norm but it doesn’t have to be the rule!

If you want a more traditional looking wedding cake the general rule is to have the base colour icing of the cake the same colour as the bride’s dress, e.g. white dress –white icing or ivory dress – ivory icing.

Type of Finish: What type of finish do you require? Would you prefer a smooth sugarpaste icing (it doesn’t matter what filling is inside) or perhaps you would prefer a cake coated in chocolate. If you choose the chocolate option would you want it rough finished, smooth or chocolate curls?

If you are having a tiered cake do you want them to be separated by pillars or stacked directly one on top of the other? Or perhaps you might prefer one of the many cake stands that are now widely available, where each cake does not have to be one above the other.

There is a lot to consider when choosing your cake, perhaps more than you might have expected! However, it is worth taking the time and trouble to give it some thought as it is one more piece that goes towards making your wedding day perfect! Look at wedding cake features in the glossy bridal magazines. Try and get a feel for what designs and shapes stand out to you.

And finally don’t worry! Your cakemaker is there to help and advise so you can choose the right cake for you.
