Useful information Videography - Guide to Choosing your Videographer -What not to do The following articles have been provided by advertisers within our directory, we you find informative and helpful |
Choosing a Videographer Choosing someone to video your wedding is a difficult decision. There is a wide variety of choice, both full time professional and semi-pro. Equipment is important for video photography as a wedding can have difficult lighting and sound conditions, particularly at the reception. A camera that has a low light level capability and professional microphones can make an enormous difference. Most videographers shoot on High-end Mini DV cameras, although some use the larger Betacam cameras. Ask if there will be one cameraman or a team. Many professionals work as a team of two, enabling a choice of camera angle, giving a more interesting result. Some prefer to work on their own, but set up a second static camera to give a choice of angle. Editing the footage afterwards is vitally important and makes the difference between a professional looking video and an untidy and boring record. A wedding video should not be too long or you will get bored watching it. One to one and quarter hours is good, two hours becomes a chore to watch. Good editing will capture the atmosphere of the day and those special moments that you may have missed on the day. Ask how long the cameraman will stay, usually up to the first dance. Having shot the video, you have a choice of media. DVD is fast becoming the main choice as the quality is so much better than VHS and you can have menus so that you can skip to the part you want to watch. (or past that boring speech that went on forever) Make sure you meet the person actually shooting on the video. They will be part of your wedding for most of the day and if you don’t like them or get on with them it could ruin your day. Some cameramen work quietly and unobtrusively, others are in your face and can be quite intrusive if you don’t like that sort of thing. Check with your vicar if you are having a church wedding as most churches have rules regarding video and still photography. Some videographers like to come along to the rehearsal to check out angles, lighting etc. Look for qualified members of The institute of Videography, which promotes professional standards in video production. And finally, enjoy your day, don’t let it become a film production, just relax and enjoy the moment. Geoff Roberts LBIPP LMPA LSWPP |
