Bombonieres Traditions The giving of bombonieres dates back hundreds of years. Originally, wedding guests threw nuts at the married couple instead of rice to bestow fertility & happiness, the almonds with their natural bitterness totally covered with sugar symbolised the ‘bitter’ (almond) ‘sweet’ (sugar) life of the married couple. The reason for almonds is one of undying love and goes back to a Greek legend. A young man called Demophon met & fell in love with a princess, but before they married Demophon’s father died and he had to return to Athens to attend the funeral, he promised to return by a certain date but he did not return until 3 months later. The princess was convinced that she would never see him again and hanged herself. The gods touched by her love for Demophon transformed her into an almond tree, the grief stricken Demophon offered a sacrifice to the almond tree, declaring his undying love and the almond tree from then on blossomed. The tradition has now evolved, the bride and groom are considered to be lucky, and therefore bombonieres (wedding favours) are a way for the bride and groom to pass on their good luck and to thank their guests for sharing their happiness and love with a keepsake of their special day. Today the almonds are placed in nets or boxes and decorated with flowers, ribbons and other decorations to co-ordinate with the scheme or theme. The number of almonds in each bomboniere is very important; it should be an odd number preferably 5, representing health, wealth, happiness, fertility & long life also being an odd number it cannot be divided just like the happy couple! But do not forget, if you do not like sugared almonds, many wonderful alternatives are now available. he bombonieres were traditionally given to the ladies, but it is now becoming increasingly popular to give men and children bombonieres and now at other joyous occasions such as baptisms, anniversaries and other special celebrations.
